Turn your negatives into positives in this fun hands-on weekend workshop in the analog darkroom. Go back in time with us as we look at negatives, analyze them, and decide how best to approach them to achieve rich tonal blacks and whites. We’ll produce a final print that you can be proud to take home and frame, to put on your own wall or to gift to your family and friends. Get artsy with us as we learn how to soften harsh light or boost the darkness and brightness in a scene with contrast filters in the darkroom to achieve different effects from the same negative. Participants can bring existing negatives or shoot new ones during the course. All formats welcome from 35 mm to 4x5.

MATERIAL COST: $30.00 for chemistry to be paid to the instructor on the day of the Workshop.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants are required to bring darkroom paper, which is for sale at the NBCCD College Store for participants to purchase ~ $45.00. (Splitting a package between participants is encouraged).

Instructor - Karen Ruet

Karen Ruet fell in love with photography in boarding school when an interested parent started up a photography class that involves learning how to take photographs with a 35 mm camera, shooting film, going on field trips, and developing prints in the darkroom. She was gifted with her first single-lens reflex camera at the age of 17 and has been perfecting her shooting techniques, and darkroom skills to achieve a perfect black and white print. Karen photographs people, botanicals, loves candid, street photography and people watching. She has worked professionally for the Telegraph Journal and Daily Gleaner, has photographed many authors, and worked for corporations. She is one of the founding members of the Photography Group SilverFish and has exhibited with the group for more than 30 exhibitions.
