6 WEEK COURSE ONLINE | 2 hours of live instruction each week

Foundations of Design- Marie Soleil Provencal

This virtual studio-course explores the fundamentals of design, which are a common foundation of fine arts, craft and design. These notions are behind masterpieces, objects making and web design. This course will include theory accompanied by examples, exercises with demonstrations, group exchanges, and suggested references. The objectives of this course are for students to learn the basics of composition with shapes, lines, colours, contrasts and typography and apply this knowledge to media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, embroidery, and collage. Students must have access to a phone or digital camera to photograph their work and be able to transfer photos on a computer. A computer with a reliable Internet connection is required to join the online class.

Materials: Participants are required to source their own materials for the class. A sketch pad, coloured markers or pencils, scissors and/or utility knife, a tube of glue, paper leftovers (example: newspapers, craft papers, magazines, old books, fabric scraps), and a cell phone or camera.

The Instructor: Marie-Soleil Provençal is a sculptor from Québec, Canada. She completed a BFA at Bishop's University and is currently a MFA candidate for 2021 at NSCAD University. She has been a research assistant on alternative materials, an assistant professor in sculpture, a technician in Fine Arts, and an instructor in Visual Arts since 2011. She is interested in the involvement of materials as co-participants in contemporary art practice. Her work addresses the relationships that we have with our surroundings, an eco-system composed of humans and non-humans. She does so by integrating mundane materials such as concrete, wood ashes, matchsticks, hay, and second-hand furniture, into her sculptures and installations. She uses techniques of moulding or assembling to render complex ideas in their simplest form.
